Special Langauge Arts Post of the month

Story review on Road Dahl's short story "Lamb to the slaughter".

Mr Maloney

Mr Maloney, husband of Mary Maloney is a detective, and at first he is quite a good and caring husband as he would take his wife out for dinner every Thursday after his work and it is their time together.

However as the story develops, Mr Maloney's love for starts declining. At the climax of the story, he lost all his feelings for his wife, and even starts turning a cold shoulder to her wife, no matter how had she tried to please her. This shows the other side of Mr Maloney, someone who is callous, uncaring. He is also a very selfish person. He wanted to leave her wife at the very time when she was pregnant, this shows that he was just a irresponsible father and a heartless man who just want to her pregnant wife to fend for herself. Of course he said that he will provide money and a good life for his wife. However, in my opinion, I am sure that for his pregnant wife who treats him as the center of his world, what she most needed was the love and the care of his husband. What made me really irritated about this character was that not only he was heartless he was also very selfish. He told his wife not to create a fuss as it would be bad for his work. At this point of time he was still just caring about his work and not the future life of his wife.

Patrick Maloney , the callous, selfish and heartless man.

Mary Maloney

She was firstly presented in the story as a loving wife, peaceful and beautiful woman, and a perfect housekeeper who was living in her own world of so-called "blissful' and "peaceful" world. It was just because everything she done was for her husband and she look up to her husband as the center of the world, not knowing that her husband did not love her anymore that resulted her in murdering her husband when she took the blow that her husband was going to leave her.

As the story reaches the climax, Mary Maloney's had a split personality. One as a loving woman. The other as someone one who is shrewd, calculating every step she makes, and is also a perfect actress. I am sure that if she was really an actor she will confirm be the best Hollywood actress. She shows no remorse with the murder and faces her husband's death with a lack of emotion. She is someone completely different. With her superb acting skills and intelligence, she managed to fool everyone. She had definitely got away from the murder as we can all tell from her giggles at the ending of the story.

Mary Maloney, the shrewd one or the loving one.
Who knows?

Food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First stop Singapore

FOOD

Food is essential in our life. We human-beings need food to survive, in fact all living things need food to survive. Different countries and different cultures also have different kinds of food. So follow me to different countries to enjoy food!

First stop! The Lion City : Singapore

wheeeeww! The aeroplane landed safely on Changi International Airport, one of the best airports of the world. Singapore, as you have heard may be a little red dot on the map. There are mainly four races on the island : Indians, Malays, Chinese and finally Eurasians. Each have different cultures and different types of food, so Singapore is surely a FOOD PARADISE! Lets start with the signature dish : CHILLI CRAB!

The Chilli Crab is was created in 1950 by Singapore Chef Cher Yam Tian with her husband Lim Choon Ngee. Mud crabs are stir-fried in semi-thick, sweet and savoury tomato and chilli based sauce. Those who are scared spicy food, do not be scared, the Chilli Crab is not really spicy. Not only the crab is nice and delicious, the sauce is too. There are some ways of eating the sauce. The most traditional way is dipping Fried Mantou (or chinese buns) into the sauce, or you can also use the French Bread. Plain white rice can also be eaten with Chilli Crabs. BUUURRRP! Ah what shall we eat next, what about some desserts. Ice Kacang!

Ice Kacang (also known as Ais Kacang ) is the signature dessert of Singapore. It is a sweet tasting and also icy dessert. It is primarily crushed ice with red beans and jellys (sweet corn, palm seed, grass jelly, agar agar, which is also a type of jelly and cendol) hidden under the ice with colourful syrups poured on top of the ice. There are also different types of flavours of Ice Kacang now (eg. durian, mango, guava, chocolate), some of them even have a scoop of ice-cream on it. Of all the flavours, the traditional one is still the best, only by eating the traditional one you can experience the real Singaporean way of life. Colourful and yummy, mmm(lick, lick)!

AH! Time flies its time to eat again. Quick, my stomach is already rumbling. Okay, next dish "Satay"! Satay is someting like the Shish Kebab from Turkey. It is usually made using chicken meat, while there are also beef and mutton ones. The marninated meat is put onto the charcoal fire to be grilled. The Satay is served together with Ketupats (Malay Rice Dumplings), cucumbers, onions and a sweet-based, but also a little spicy peanut sauce. MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH! All the satays that were on the table are now all in my stomach.

Whats for dinner? Ah! The Hainanese Chicken rice. The chicken and the rice is of course the most important part of the dish. The chicken is boiled is chicken bone and pork stock. The rice however do not use the stock as there is a specially made to be used for the "oily " rice. The "oily rice " is really nice as it has a unique flavour. The chicken is also especially juicy. DELICIOUS!

After a day of eating I am already tired ( yawn), I am going to sleep.......(snore, snore)

Ring! The alarm bell rang, another eating day.

8AM-Breakfast
Guess what will it be? Not Macdonald, not Burger King. Haha can't guess it right, it is Roti Prata.
Roti Prata is the Singaporean Indian style of the Indian paratha, a type of Indian Pancake made using fats, egg and dough. Roti Prata actually means flat bread. The traditional way of eating Prata is with curry, mutton curry, fish curry, chicken curry. However, now some very innovative restaurant owners had come up with super innovative pratas, eg. cheese prata, durian prata, pineapple prata, ice-cream prata, chocolate prata, pizza prata. What a good breakfast Prata makes. I am feeling thirsty, is there anything to drink? Of course there is.

Teh Tarik! Teh Tarik is made using black tea and condensed milk. It is a little sweet and it makes a perfect combination with the Prata. The other name for Teh Tarik is pulling tea.The mixture is poured back and forth from two vessels over a certain height.

The food in my stomach has already been digested. I am hungry! I want to have some spicy food.
How about Laksa? Laksa is a penarakan food, which is a food with Chinese and Malay merger. What we are eating now is the Curry Laksa which is more popular in Singapore, while there is also a type of Laksa called Asam Laksa, which is the sour type and is commonly served in Penang, Malaysia. (Sniff, Sniff) I can't wait to eat it.

Is there anything that could be eaten with the laksa? Otak! Otak is actually spicy fish cake wrapped inside banana leaf and grilled over charcoal fire. It is very popular and is most of the time eaten as a snack.

Black Pepper Crab! Okay, everyone ,this would be the last dish that we will be eating in Singapore. The Black Pepper Crab was first created at Long Beach Seafood Restaurant. It is made using hard-shell crabs, cooked is a thick peeper gravy. The thick and juicy crab-meat together with the spicy black pepper gravy , it is really delicious . What to do with the sauce, you can do the same like the sauce Chilli Crab. WHEW

We have come to the end of our two day eating trip in Singapore, stay tuned to the FOOOOOOD Blog and I will bring you to our next destination for the next two-day eating trip.

BYE-BYE
